Five Ways to Practice Conversational English All Day, Every Day
1. Narrate your day like a reality TV show
Go about your day. As things happen, practice your English speaking by discussing the things you do, as well as the people, things and sometimes problems you encounter. Talk about everything as if you had a million viewers out in the audience, interested in your life. If something was difficult about a particular part of the day, talk about how that obstacle was easy or hard for you to overcome.
2. Translate everything, on the go
This is an exercise that can be worked into many different parts of your life, just like the reality TV show. Often, when done frequently enough, it almost becomes a habit. Pretty great habit to have, right? To give an example: you’re driving on the road and see a billboard with a funny phrase on it. See if you can translate it and speak your English translation out loud with excellent pronunciation.
3. Read aloud for 20 minutes every day:
If you have want to improve English speaking skills, buy an English newspaper every day and read aloud for 20 minutes. This exercise will help the muscles in your mouth acclimatize to the different sounds associated with the English language. Remember, not all languages are created equal and there are some sounds in the English language that are not very common in other languages.
4. Listen and be interested
Listening more and talking less means you will understand and bring your listener into the conversation. This helps them to trust you and make them feel that you really understand their needs.
On the way to work, rather than listening to music, listen to an audio book. Listening to an audio book not only improves your listening skills, but also can improve your understanding skills. In other words, it can help you to understand when others speak to you in English.
